Attending Uncle Jake's service has caused my recall of my favorite memories about him; as well as Aunt Violet. They were a unique pair & include the following......
a talent for loving every child, no matter what thier attributes; good & bad! Uncle Jake could make you feel so special......I am reminded of my childhood nickname; "Robbie"....only Aunt June remains who called me that!
Uncle Jake's interest in all things growing outside; from giant redwood trees to the smallest hummingbird nest. We'd happily pick grapefruit from the tree in the yard & roses in the front. As a young girl, I remember the anticipation of going to see the christmas lighting display created by Paul, under Uncle Jake's direction. It became the highlight of the holidays as we would take Uncle Jake's hand and wander amongst the myriad of electrical connections making the lights possible. Amazing to a child when it was dark enough for the whole display to light up, especially the manger scene with the star on top of it. I learned that for every tall woman there was a special man and recall Aunt Violet telling me that often. She patted her knee one evening at my grandmother's house and as Uncle Jake passed by said "See...... Robbie....he just fits!" Uncle Jake promptly sat on her knee and just beamed. He told me that there was someone special out there for everybody and he'd found that in Aunt Violet. To think that they are together again gives me tears as I type these few words. My husband, Rick is a great fisherman and Uncle Jake never tired of hearing of his latest escapades. My last lunch outing with Uncle Jake consisted of his enjoyment of a bowl of clam chowder as he refused to wear his teeth! He holds a special place in my heart.....a great uncle....as a man and a true "great" uncle! Love from Robyn (Welke) Sottile

Hi Paul,

Thank you so much for letting us know about your Dad. We so enjoyed him; he had such a great sense of humor and was a pleasure to work with despite all the problems we encountered throughout the job.

Please give our deepest sympathies to your family. Gavin had made a habit of calling your Dad every couple of months to see how he was getting on. We will miss him very much.

He was still a ladies man...every time I came by or if he came to the office, he always gave me a kiss and a hug. They broke the mold when they made Jake.

All our best to you and your family.

Sincerely,
Sherry Smith
